Shopify is a leading cloud-based e-commerce platform designed for businesses of all sizes to set up and manage online stores. It offers a wide range of tools for marketing, payments, shipping, and customer engagement. With over 2.1 million businesses using Shopify to manage vital business data, it is crucial to have a robust backup strategy in place. Ensuring that your data is backed up protects against data loss due to human error, cyberattacks, or technical failures, which could otherwise jeopardize your business operations.

What happens when Shopify data is deleted?

When you delete a product from your Shopify store, it's permanently removed and cannot be restored. The platform does not offer a built-in backup solution for individual use, and once data is gone, it cannot be easily restored. This can lead to significant operational disruptions, financial management issues, and damage to customer trust. To mitigate these risks, Shopify themselves recommend regularly performing your own backups.

Export Shopify data to create a local backup

Shopify has a native import and export tool that allows Shopify users to export their store to their local computers in CSV format.

What Shopify data can be exported using the native tool?

  • Products: Export product details including titles, descriptions, prices, SKUs, and inventory quantities.

  • Customers: Export customer data such as names, email addresses, and purchase history.

  • Orders: Export order information, including order IDs, customer details, order dates, and statuses.

  • Financial Reports: Export financial data such as sales reports and financial summaries.

Limitations of using Shopify export tool as a backup alternative

  • Data must be manually exported regularly.

  • Not all data can be exported through Shopify’s export tools. Certain types of data, such as custom metadata, app-specific data, and some settings, are not be included in standard exports. This can result in incomplete backups.

  • Users need to keep track of and organize the exports to be able to quickly access it in case of a deletion.

  • Exported data needs to be stored securely to prevent unauthorized access. Manual handling of these files increases the risk of data breaches, especially if files are stored on unsecured devices or platforms.
